0 MusclePharm Almost Out of Business

The inside word that I’m hearing at the moment is that MusclePharm is teetering on the verge of going out of business. They’re several million dollars in the red, and have failed to turn any kind of profit in the time they’ve been operating. A recent phone call to their office revealed a disconnected phone line, although that’s apparently been cleared up. The problem here is very simple: They’re not making any money, so the small monetary inflow that they have is about to be stopped, because they’re not going to have the cash to pay for new product to get made…and no manufacturer is going to float a loan to a company that has only been around for a short while and is already millions of dollars in debt.

They’ve got some smart guys over at MusclePharm, but they don’t really know what they’re doing, and their entire product line is less than impressive (to me anyway).

Some estimates put the company out of business before the end of September, while conservative estimates give them until the end of the year.

0 Canadian IFBB Pro Bodybuilder Ben Pakulski Signs With Weider

The 2008 Canadian Championships Super-Heavyweight and Overall Winner registered a blip on the radar with a third-place finish in his IFBB Pro Debut at the 2009 IFBB Pro Bodybuilding Weekly Championships, mostly on the strength of his crisp conditioning and standout lower limbs. Although he dropped to seventh at this year’s IFBB New York Pro in May, the 5’10” 269-pounder showed marked improvement throughout his back and chest.

“I started reading FLEX when I was thirteen, so when I signed that contract, one of my childhood dreams came true,” Pakulski said. “It gives me motivation to work even harder this offseason so that when I step onstage, I won’t have any weak areas.”

Look for Pak-Man to show the fruits of his labor at the inaugural 2011 IFBB FLEX Pro, presented by Ultimate Nutrition, February 26 in Los Angeles, California.

0 MusclePharm Bleeding Money

Perhaps one of the most ambitious nutritional supplement companies to hit the market in the past few years is MusclePharm. Right out of the gates they signed Paul Dillett, Louis Simmons, and a bunch of MMA fighters to endorse the product line. Getting Paul was a huge coup because he is the president of a decent-sized bodybuilding federation (the World Bodybuilding & Fitness Federation, or WBFF), as was getting Louie Simmons, who is a legend in the powerlifting scene. They also signed some NFL players, and have Dr. Eric Serrano on the team. Paul and Louie are still huge in their respective fields, and the NFL and MMA guys in their stable are certainly up-and-comers (Xyience tried going the MMA-Sponsorship route a few years ago, and it didn’t seem to work – while EAS did the NFL-player thing and it worked extremely well).

MusclePharm also made the early decision to go public, meaning you can buy stock in the company (*a share is going for about a buck right now).

All of these early and aggressive moves have made them the Bodybuilding.com “New Company of the Year” for 2009, and the 18th best selling brand on the site, while their testosterone booster, Battle Fuel, is the 5th best selling product in that category. If we take a closer look at the testosterone booster category, however, we find that two of the top 5 products are different sizes of the same product…Optimum ZMA. I don’t think it’s really fair to put a $10 bottle of ZMA in the same category as $40 bottles of legit test boosters…so if we don’t consider the ZMA bottles, then what we’re actually seeing is a top 3 product in the category. That’s no joke.

But since they are a publicly traded company, their finances are a matter of public record. And here’s how they break down:

Three months ended 2010 ———–

(unaudited)

Sales of product, net of $61,867 and

$112,314 allowances and discounts for

March 31, 2010 and 2009, respectively $ 1,258,588

Cost of sales (873,632)

———–

Gross margin (loss) 384,956

Operating Expenses:

Advertising and promotion 1,195,696

Bad debt 1,890

Service charges and fees 9,882

Salaries and labor 226,139

Depreciation and amortization 3,065

Insurance 22,690

Information technology 28,629

Travel, meetings and entertainment 28,720

Occupancy, telephone and utilities 30,302

Office and warehouse supplies 4,307

Professional fees 1,084,583

Other 709

———–

Total Operating Expenses 2,636,612

———–

Operating (Loss) (2,251,656)

Interest (expense) (358,060)

———–

Net (Loss) $(2,609,716)

===========

Now, I’m not really great with numbers, but their losses are in the millions. Millions! Removing the professional fees (the cost of going public), they still would have lost a quarter million dollars. And if we look at their sales figures, their promotional costs (sponsorships, etc…) are roughly the same as their sales. They’re certainly being very aggressive with their sponsorships, promotions, and athlete signings, but I’m just not sure that this business model is sustainable in the long term. They’ve certainly seen some returns on their investments, as evidenced by their ranking on Bodybuilding.com, but is it enough to turn things around before they go bankrupt?

Time will tell.

0 Species Nutrition Lawsuit and Company Update

Species Nutrition is in flux right now, either planning to reformulate their current line, or to phase the brand out altogether. I’m hearing that Bactolac (the company who previously handled their product manufacturing) is hesitant to continue working with Species and owner, Dave Palumbo, as they’ve been named in the recent lawsuit against Species Nutrition. From my understanding, Dave has been contacting other production facilities. However, I would also guess that his source for usnic acid is unlikely to continue furnishing it for him, as they too have been named in the current lawsuit, as has Bodybuilding.com, who will likely not carry the Species Nutrition brand after the lawsuit is finished.

I’m not entirely certain which route Dave is going, but he’d be smart to discontinue using the Species name entirely, as anyone performing a Google search will be greeted with an auto-fill informing them of the lawsuit:

In a practical sense, this means anyone who searches for information about Species Nutrition, will likely find out about the lawsuit, alleging unsafe (potentially deadly) products. Therefore, it’s in the company’s best interest to dissolve, and this is exactly what I’ve heard they’re talking about doing…perhaps to open up another company under a different name. All of that is logical, albeit conjecture at this point – but I’ll stand behind it and say we’re going to minimally see Somalyze and Lipolyze reformulated, and the name changed (but again, perhaps the whole company will also be setting up shop under a different one). I also think it’s telling that Palumbo hasn’t publicly spoken about the lawsuit, instead allowing John Romano and Joel Goldberg do all of the talking; this way, when Species takes a beating in court, and they pull usnic acid from their products, it’s John and Joel who have gone on the record and been proven wrong.

I’ve also heard from multiple sources that they’ve attempted to enlist the services of Patrick Arnold as a formulator for their revamped line – this is not a rumor, but rather, a confirmed job offer from Species Nutrition to Patrick Arnold. For many reasons, this is a bad idea: I’m not entirely certain that Patrick’s recent legal worries are finished, and the trifecta of three ex-cons involved in a single nutritional company, who have already been sued for product liability, would be a great target for the FDA. Also, the last time Patrick was involved with Species Nutrition, it involved Testolyze, a 6-OXO product which was pulled off shelves following the Bodybuilding.com raid.

Still, Patrick has had proven success as a formulator; he’s got a commercial winner on his hands with the Chelated D-Aspartic Acid product, he struck gold with prohormones, and did very well with Geranimine. By contrast, Palumbo couldn’t formulate a glass of chocolate milk.

At this stage, a enlisting the services of Patrick seems unlikely, as he would almost certainly lose his job over at Muscular Development. I’m also told by numerous sources (confirmed) that Patrick declined the offer to formulate for Species. This all went down approximately at the same time as Romano happened to write an article about how great Patrick’s new DAA product is.

But…should we see any new (and decent) products being mysteriously added to the Species Nutrition (or whatever they call themselves by that time) product line, a lot of suspicion will be leveled at Patrick.

FMG PRESS RELEASE

July 20, 2010 - For those of you in attendance at the 2009 IFBB
Fitness Olympia, you unknowingly saw the last competition of IFBB Fitness icon Tracey Greenwood. After a long and wildly successful fitness career in both the NPC and IFBB, Tracey has decided she will be retiring from competition due to lingering injuries and just moving on in life in general. Yes, Tracey had thought about retirement previously and honestly we laughed it off and told her that she still had her best in her and not to retire. That was in 2008 when she won the IFBB Houston Pro Fitness, IFBB Atlantic City Pro Fitness, won the IFBB Europa Super Show Pro Fitness for the second time and finished second at the IFBB Fitness Olympia. That same year she was voted the FLEX Magazine Women’s Athlete Of The Year. Glad you listened to us Tracey! In 2009 Tracey started off the year placing third at the IFBB Fitness International, won the Atlantic City again and unbeknownst at the time, finished her career in third place at the IFBB Fitness Olympia.

This doesn’t mean you won’t still see Tracey. She is an expediter at almost every major NPC national competition, along with all the competitions in the NPC New York-Metropolitan district, is doing her share of emcee work, is a personal trainer and continues to promote both the NPC Tracey Greenwood Classic and NPC Deleware States.

Although now retired, rest assured that at 41 years old, Tracey’s physique can still stand right up there with any IFBB Pro Fitness competitor old or new. And in the end, she’ll always be “Trixie” to us!

0 Female Bodybuilder and Kickboxer Lateisha Jandreau Charged With Murdering Her Husband

A 38-year-old bodybuilding woman from Currituck County remained jailed Sunday after being charged with the slaying of her husband and amid reports the couple had been having marital problems.

Lateisha Jandreau is accused of first-degree murder of 51-year-old Paul
Jandreau, who had been missing since the middle of last week. His wife was found hiding in a closet of the couple’s Brumsey Landing house Friday evening and his body was later discovered in the garage.

Authorities named Lateisha Jandreau’s brother, Eugene Askew, a person of interest in the probe. He frequents Elizabeth City, Gates County and Suffolk, Va., reports said.

Paul Jandreau, a retired Navy master chief, worked at BAE Systems in Norfolk, Va. Concerns of his whereabouts started when he failed to show up for work Wednesday morning.

Paul and Lateisha Jandreau had been married approximately eight years after meeting in a kickboxing class. She won a state bodybuilding championship last month.

Paul Jandreau’s brother Mike told The Virginian-Pilot that his brother had been talking for weeks about a divorce, but that his brother was not worried about anything and that he just needed to get her out of the house so he could have his life back.

Mike Jandreau also told The Virginian-Pilot that he had advised his brother to retain a lawyer and had thought his brother had done so.

Currituck Sheriff Susan Johnson told television station WAVY-10 that she obtained a search warrant and went to the house Friday evening after Lateisha Jandreau repeatedly delayed requests to answer questions.

“It was bizarre because she was actually in a dark house, hiding in the closet,” Johnson said. “She should have known that we were going to be spending an amount of time at the residence.”
Johnson said she and investigators, while searching the garage, “recognized a really faint odor of what we knew to be the odor of death.”

Reports said that friends saw Lateisha Jandreau and her brother loading furniture into the bed of Paul Jandreau’s truck, with the truck backed up to the house.

Friends also reportedly said that the house’s windows were covered on the inside with wrapping paper and that one of the bathrooms reeked of bleach.

WAVY-10 reported that Lateisha Jandreau has been working at Xe, formerly known as Blackwater.

0 Irene Nickole Overcomes Serious Odds On The Way To becoming a Champion

MOST of her competitors were at least 20 years her junior when Irene Nickole became champion of the world last month. It was remarkable enough the bodybuilder was 52 years old. Even more startling, she was still recovering from the trauma of a random assault.

In 1990, Nickole placed number three in the world. She'd been Australian champion four times. Her best work seemed to lie in front of her, but she suddenly decided to quit. The girls, she says, were getting too ''muscularly'' big.

''I didn't like the direction it was taking,'' she says. ''There was no feminity in what was going on. It wasn't my look.''

She stayed out of the game for nearly 20 years. And then a new category came along called the Figure Class, that was ''muscular and fit but feminine''.

Normally, it takes a year to prepare for competition. After only 12 weeks' intensive training and dieting, Nickole - who runs her own personal training business to the stars - flexed and posed her way through the state and national titles to earn a place in the 2008 Ms Universe Championships in England. She was 50 years old, but she was feeling good.

And then a horrible thing happened on the way to the airport. The traffic lights had been orange, and she'd changed her mind about barrelling through the intersection. The car came to rest about a metre over the pedestrian crossing. There was still plenty of room for people to get by, but a young man - who Nickole guessed to be in his early 30s - began verbally abusing her.

0 BCAA’s Boost Protein Synthesis in Muscles

Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) can increase the body’s skeletal muscle growth in combination with resistance exercise, according to a new study (Acta Physiol (Oxf). ePub 2010 May 28. DOI: 10.1111/j.1748-1708.2010.02151.x). Researchers from the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences sought to distinguish between the influence of resistance exercise and BCAA on key enzymes involved in the regulation of protein synthesis in skeletal muscle. Nine healthy adults received either a mixture of BCAAs or flavored water before performing unilateral resistance exercise on two separate occasions. Muscle biopsies were taken from both resting and exercising muscle before, immediately after and one hour after exercise.

Phosphorylation of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway was enhanced in exercising and resting muscle to a greater degree with BCAA supplementation. Also, BCAA intake increased the phosphorylation of the enzyme p70(s6) kinase, compared to resistance exercise alone. Exercise alone and with BCAA supplementation attenuated phosphorylation of the eukaryotic elongation factor 2 (eEF2) in exercising and resting muscles.

0 Olympic Gold? A New Effect of Caffeine Boosts Performance

New research shows increased muscle performance in sub-maximal activities, which in humans can range from everyday activities to running a marathon.

With no current regulations in place, the scientists from Coventry University believe their findings may have implications for the use of caffeine in sport to improve performance.

The scientists present their work at the Society for Experimental Biology Annual Meeting in Prague on Wednesday 30th June 2010.

“A very high dosage of caffeine, most likely achieved via tablets, powder or a concentrated liquid, is feasible and might prove attractive to a number of athletes wishing to improve their athletic performance”, explains lead researcher, Dr Rob James.

“A small increase in performance via caffeine could mean the difference between a gold medal in the Olympics and an also-ran”, he added.

Caffeine is not currently listed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) as a banned substance at any concentration in blood or urine samples. Before 2004 WADA did set a specific level over which athletes could be banned, but this restriction was removed.

Muscle activity is divided into maximal, where the muscles are pushed to full capacity such as in sprinting or weight lifting, and sub-maximal, which covers all other activities.

A member of the team, Jason Tallis, tested the effect of caffeine on both the power output and endurance of soleus muscles (lower leg muscle) in mice, under both maximal and sub-maximal activities.

He found that a caffeine dosage of 70 µM enhanced power output by ~6% during both types of activity. This effect in humans is likely to be very similar, according to the researchers.

“70 ?M caffeine concentration is the absolute maximum that can normally achieved in the blood plasma of a human, however concentrations of 20-50 ?M are not unusual in people with high caffeine intakes”, explains Dr James.

Resultant caffeine in blood plasma (70?M maximum) may act at receptors on skeletal muscle causing enhanced force production. Scientists already know that ingestion of caffeine can increase athletic performance by stimulating the central nervous system.

Additionally, 70?M caffeine treatment increased endurance during sub-maximal activity, but significantly reduced endurance during maximal activity.

0 Nutrex Being Sued for Using Amphetamines in Products

Nutrex advertises its dietary supplements as “all natural,” but uses drugs in them, including an amphetamine, which is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, according to a class action in Passaic County Court.

The class sued Nutrex Research, its president and founder Jeffrey A. McCarrell, and its vice president and co-founder Jens Ingenohl, all of Oviedo, Fla.

The two men “formulated the product,” and sell them as “Lipo-6 Hers,” “Lipo-6 Black” and “Ignite,” according to the complaint.

The class claims
Nutrex pushes the products as “sports nutritional supplements” that “burn fat and allow people to lose weight … as a result of the cocktail of natural stimulants and other ingredients.”

But the key ingredient in all the products is a substance called “methylsynephrine,” which is “another name for a prescription drug called Oxilofrine,” according to the complaint. It adds that Oxilofrine is “a stimulant drug of the amphetamine class” that was developed and “used to treat low blood pressure.”

Oxilofrine “is a metabolite of methoxymethamphetamine,” commonly known as PMMA, which is “an illegal designer drug that is considered a banned substance in numerous countries” and has “been responsible for deaths of numerous people,” according to the complaint.

The class claims that Oxilofrine “is considered a performance-enhancing drug” and “is classified as a banned substance by both the World Anti-Doping Agency and the United States Anti-Doping Agency.”

It claims that “testing of [Nutrex's products] by gas chromatography confirms” the presence of Oxilofrine.
The fact that “methylsynephrine equals Oxilofrine … is common knowledge in the sports nutrition industry, given the suspension of numerous athletes” who took products containing it, and then tested positive for banned substances, according to the complaint.

They plaintiffs say that Nutrex knows about the problem, but continues to “falsely advertise” that its products are “all natural,” that they do not affect blood pressure and that they do not contain banned substances.
The class seeks damages for fraud. It is represented by Donald Boshada with Milstein, Adelman & Kreger of Elmwood Park, N.J.

0 Victor Conte on Boxing, USADA, Steroids, Blood-Doping, EPO

I’m now a part of the anti-doping movement. I’m trying to help those at WADA [The World Anti-Doping Agency,] and, USADA [The United States Anti-Doping Agency] to develop more effective anti-doping policies and procedures. And that’s what I’m doing now, and I’m very outspoken about it.

The difference is that here is what people fail to realize, and that’s that from 1984, which is when I founded BALCO, and until the year 2000 — so, for 16 years — I did things the right way. The only thing that I did was to do comprehensive blood and urine testing of athletes, and to develop individualized nutrition programs for them.

But it got to a point, for me — and this doesn’t make it right, because it was certainly wrong, and it was certainly a mistake — but I had gotten to a point where I thought differently. I had gotten to a point when I realized that Olympic officials and those that control major league football and baseball were enabling, harboring, and, promoting this culture of drug use in sport. And I made the bad decision to join that culture. It was a huge mistake, and I wish now that I had never done it.

That point was in 2000, and, of course, I did that for the years 2000, 2001, 2002, and, 2003. So, for four years, I was about helping athletes to circumvent these testing policies. Once BALCO was raided, I realized how I had been reckless, and that I had put many others at risk — Victor Conte.

FanHouse caught up with former BALCO founder, Victor Conte, to get his view on why a fighter would benefit from steroids or EPO, as well as his explanation as to how a competitor’s illicit drug use can escape detection by not only by the sport’s current drug-testing system, but, also, that employed, for the first time in boxing history, by The United States Anti-Doping Agency for the May 1 clash between Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley.

As a refresher, USADA tested Mayweather for both blood and urine on March 22, April 1, April 13 and then on the night directly after the fight. Mayweather reportedly provided urine only on April 3, April 6, April 21 and April 24.

Meanwhile, Mosley provided both blood and urine on March 23, March 31, April 12 and directly after the bout on fight night. Mosley supplied urine on April 3, April 6, April 21 and April 24.

FanHouse: Can we begin with the concern for EPO in boxing?

Victor Conte: Well, you’re specifically asking about the significance of the phrase, ‘19 hours.’ And yes, EPO will clear the system in less than a day. But that number is a mean average — the 19 hours.

So what that means is that you only have to do an injection of EPO to maintain the intial stage. When we first started using the drug, it the initial stage was called, ‘The corrective phase.’ And that when typically you do it three times a week for two weeks.

And you monitor your hermaticrit — the percentage of red blood cells — and then, you re-test, and if you hit the mark, then you thereafter can go to the second phase, which they call ‘The maintainence phase.’ As you know, there’s the uses of EPO for cancer patients and kidney failure patients and HIV patients.

Can you please continue to clarify what’s going on here with this, and what you’re getting at?

Okay, so, now, here is what typically these athletes can do. They’re sophisticated. They will use EPO, and let’s just say that their normal hermaticrit starts out within a boxer. Say he starts out with a baseline hermaticrit of 44 percent. After using EPO, for two weeks, it goes to 52 percent.

What do those numbers mean?

That means that you have your total whole blood volume is approximately 44 percent red bood cells and 56 percent serum, which is the fluid portion of blood. When you produce more red blood cells, then the percentage of the red blood cells compared to the total whole blood volume becomes higher.

So you have more red blood cells and oxygen molecules which attaches to hemogloein on the red blood cells, and that’s what fuels and carries your nutrients to the rest of your tissues. You will absolutely have great recovery, and you will have far better oxygen uptake and utilization.

It will really serve you in the later rounds. However, this is important to understand. When they test the blood, they look at the percentage.

Can you provide me with an example of that type of examination or testing of the blood?

As an example, with cyclists, for example, Tour De France cyclists. They test the blood, and if it comes back higher than 50 percent on the side of the red blood cells, they don’t ban them, but they suspend them for two weeks for what they call ‘Health concerns.’

Okay? So you don’t want your baseline hermaticrit to be over 50 percent. They like to target it and keep it at 49 percent. Increasing it from 44-to-49 percent, however, will certainly increase your performance.

Okay, so, can you please apply that to boxing?

So let’s back up, hypothetically, okay, to Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather when they were signing or negotiating for their fight, or in the case of the Mayweather-Shane Mosley fight.

If somebody were advising them, they could have used EPO throughout for two weeks, if someone were advising them on how to do it, just like the cyclists do, and they could have previously extracted some of these red blood cells and put them in the refridgerator.

Okay? So then, five weeks out from the fight, coming in, they can’t use EPO, because they’re being randomly tested and that might be discovered even though the EPO only stays within your system for a day.

But you can re-infuse your own red blood cells. And if you are shown how to re-infuse your red blood cells, they can’t detect that.

But they can detect the percentage increase, correct?

But they can detect the percentage, exactly.
If you’re re-infusing the blood and that percentage starts to drop down, you know, as you’re preparing and training for the fight, then you can just re-infuse some of their previously withdrawn red blood cells by intravenous injection.

They can re-infuse that and they can keep it at a steady level of 49 percent all the way up to the fight. So now, that’s all undetectable by USADA.

Is that called blood-doping?

That’s called blood-doping.

What different types of EPO are there?

Well, you know, there are a number of them. Do you mean brands or are you talking about the different generations?

I mean the ones that would be most applicable to the situation in which it would likely be used to achieve the effects that a boxer might want to achieve?

Well, let me explain something, because I see where you’re going with your questions here. And, let me say this. That, the reason that I don’t believe that this testing that the United States Anti-Doping Agency did for the Floyd Mayweather-Shane Mosley fight was truly random…

And I heard over, and over, and over, that it was going to be, ‘Random, random, random.’ But that is not random when you start five weeks out from a fight, and then you do blood tests until three weeks out from a fight, testing for a couple of weeks, and then you have no blood testing for a final 19 or 18 days.

I know that the threat is there of them blood testing at any time, and that that means that it could be random, but in this particular case, in the end, it really wasn’t. Now, you started out by asking ‘What is it that a boxer could do?’

Yes, I mean, what desired effect could a boxer get out of this?

Here’s something that you have to realize. Let’s take an Olympic athlete that is subject to this USADA-type of testing, and they’re preparing for a competitive season that leads to the Olympic games — whether you’re an Olympic track athlete, a swimmer, boxer, whatever.

So that’s going to be in an August time-frame, of, let’s say, for preparation for the Beijing Olympics in 2008. The year before, October, November, December, January, during those months, they can use anabolic steroids in conjunction with an intense weight training program.

And they can develop an explosive strength and speed base. That’s going to serve them nine months later at the Olympic games. So, in other words, if it’s before that fight, all that they had to do before the start of the testing — I believe on March 22 for a May 1 fight?

They could have been using testosterone for three months before that date, and the benefits would carry over that five weeks until the fight.

And, in fact, what people don’t understand, and we’ll talk specifically about anabolic steroids, now, is that you perform far better when you’re a couple of weeks off of steroids than you do when you’re on steroids.

Why is that?

The reason is that steroids work through a process called ‘Cell-voluminaztion.’ So it makes you pumped, and you give yourself more nutrients and fluids inside of the cells. And it helps you to grow and it helps you to become stronger, but it also makes you tight. You lack in flexibility and speed.

If you taper off of steroids for two weeks, you can regain a normal water balance and you are faster and more powerful than ever. So, what could have happened is that for two months, let’s say, before this March 22 date they used with Mayweather and Mosley, a boxer could have used anabolic steroids.

This is hypothetical here. And then, they go off of them. Well, then you’re still, believe me, the benefits of using two months of testosterone or anabolic steroids are still going to be there five weeks later. You are going to retain a lot of the strength and the speed from using the steroids.

So that’s a way that you can beat the testing?

You can totally beat the testing, and it’s not random because it starts five weeks out from the fight. Random is 24/7, 365 days a year. It’s not five weeks before a fight.

When I hear this, ‘Random, random, random,’ well, what about the five weeks before the USADA testing began when either fighter could have been using anabolic steroids?

“We couldn’t be more excited to combine the power of film with the passion of athletics for this one-of-a-kind showcase,” said David Roemer, CEO of Ideas United and Co-founder of Campus MovieFest. “We feel honored and privileged to partner with the Arnold Sports Festival while leveraging our experience of providing filmmakers with unforgettable opportunities.”

Filmmakers of all ages will be invited to submit films less than 15 minutes in length to the ASFF in a variety of categories including narrative, documentary, animated, and broadcast films. The films should explore the lives, efforts, inspirations, and hopes of people striving for achievement in individual athletic pursuits ranging from bodybuilding to boxing, gymnastics to judo, table tennis to weightlifting, grappling to skateboarding.

“Arnold and I welcome this opportunity to join in partnership with the long-established and highly successful Campus MovieFest team,” said Jim Lorimer, co-promoter of the Arnold Sports Festival. “The CMF program focus has been on affording students throughout the nation the chance to compete as film producers and directors. This goal fits perfectly with our youth-oriented Arnold Sports Festival program. Short film submissions will also be encouraged from film production artists of all ages throughout the nation and the world.

“The film focus will be on the athletic endeavors and motivations of the individual athlete. Why does the athlete do it and what does it mean in his or her life? The stories will be of great human interest and the ASFF winner will be invited to spend a day on a Hollywood movie set with Arnold in addition to other prizes.”

The Arnold Sports Film Festival encourages both traditional and alternative storytelling, combining creativity and excellence in cinema with the drama of athletes determined to be the very best. In addition, Ideas United will bring the ASFF to more than 50 colleges, universities and high schools as part of Campus MovieFest. CMF provides students with everything they need to create short movies for free and will extend the ASFF reach to more than 100,000 college students.

The ASFF – through a renowned entertainment and sports industry jury that will include Gov. Schwarzenegger – will award significant prize packages to winning filmmakers during the Arnold Sports Festival. The ASFF will be held at the Arena Grand Movie Theater in downtown Columbus.
